Why 7 is the most common total with two dice

With two six-sided dice there are 36 combinations. Six of them add up to 7 (1+6, 2+5, 3+4, 4+3, 5+2, 6+1), so 7 comes up one time in six. Totals of 2 and 12 have only one combination each, so they appear just one time in 36. Rolling the dice 100 times and counting the totals is a classic maths lesson on probability distributions.

Tips

  • Lost your dice? Keep this page open on a phone in the middle of the table.
  • Need numbers bigger than 100 or without repeats? Use the random number wheel.
  • Flick-style spinner instead of dice? Try the number spinner.
